EV charging cost calculator
See what your electric car costs per mile, month and year at your utility's rate, and how that compares with gas at today's prices in your state.
EV vs. gas cost per mile by state
Home charging at each state's average residential rate (0.30 kWh/mile) versus a 30 MPG car at the state's current regular gas price (EIA). Savings are per 12,000 miles.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to charge an electric car at home?
At the U.S. average of 17.99¢/kWh, a typical EV using 0.30 kWh per mile (including charging losses) costs about 5.4¢ per mile. That's $54 per 1,000 miles, or about $648 a year at 12,000 miles.
Is charging an EV cheaper than gas?
In every state, home charging is cheaper per mile than a 30 MPG gas car at current prices. The biggest savings are in Washington and Nevada. The smallest are in Hawaii, where electricity is expensive. Public DC fast charging at $0.40–$0.60/kWh can cost as much as gas.
How can I lower EV charging costs?
Switch to your utility's time-of-use or EV rate and schedule charging overnight, when off-peak prices are often 30–60% lower. Use Level 2 at home rather than DC fast chargers, and precondition the cabin while plugged in.
