Frequently asked questions
What uses the most electricity in a home?
Typically: space heating and cooling (often 35–50% of use), water heating (12–18%), the refrigerator and freezers, the dryer, cooking, and lighting and electronics. EVs, pools, hot tubs and well pumps can each rival the AC. Add yours above to see your own ranking.
How do I do a home energy audit myself?
List every device that plugs in or is hardwired. Note watts from labels or the defaults here, and estimate hours honestly. Compare the total with your bill's kWh. If there's a big gap, a plug-in watt meter or your smart meter's hourly data will usually find it. Many utilities also offer free or subsidized professional audits.
