Frequently asked questions

How do I find out which electric companies serve my address?

Enter your ZIP code above. We list every utility that serves part of that ZIP. If several appear, your bill or your street address decides which one is yours. In deregulated states, retail providers licensed in your state appear too.

Can I switch electric companies?

Only in deregulated markets: most of Texas, plus Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, DC, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine. Elsewhere your utility is set by your address. There you save money by choosing a cheaper rate plan from your utility, such as time-of-use, or by using less. How deregulation works.

What does the outage-minutes number mean?

It is SAIDI, the total minutes the average customer was without power in a year, including major storms, as reported to EIA. Lower is better. The U.S. average is a few hours a year, and big storms can push a utility far higher in a single year.

Why is the rate different from the price on my bill?

We show the average all-in rate: total residential revenue divided by kWh sold. It includes customer charges, delivery and fuel adjustments, so it is usually higher than the energy charge printed on a bill. It is the right number for comparing what companies really cost.
